Does ALL Milk Really Do a Body Good?

From the time you were a small child, your mom probably told you to “finish drinking your milk, missy!” Which makes total sense, since milk makes you grow big and strong, right? Well, mom, that might not be entirely true.

Though milk is far healthier than popping open a can of sugary soda, your typical store brand milk might not be as “healthy” as you’ve always thought. Are we turning your world upside down already? Not to worry! We are here to share with you several reasons why you might want to think twice before downing your next ice cold glass of milk….for your sake, and your precious baby’s as well!

Are you drinking happy cow milk or sad cow milk?

While it may sound like we’re jesting a bit, the reality can be a bit hard to swallow.

Let’s first begin with the simple fact that a female cow produces milk for the sole purpose of feeding their young. However, in large commercial farms, a mother cow is forcibly impregnated, and then sadly, has her precious baby taken away from her, sometimes within hours of giving birth. Can you even imagine? The intense bond between mother and baby is the most natural, powerful, and beautiful thing in the animal kingdom, but in these cases, it creates pure stress for both mother and baby because they are separated.

As sad as this is to even think about, especially for a “mother-to-be,” what does this have to do with you and your baby? Well, it’s important to know that this separation stress decreases milk production and makes a cow more susceptible to disease. Poor things! To combat this, the mama cows are often injected with massive doses of hormones to ramp up milk production and antibiotics to stave off disease, which can be passed on to you and your baby upon consumption.

Ready for some good news? Yes, please! It’s been proven that organic, pasture raised cows do produce less milk, but that milk is free of these chemicals and comes from a happy cow mama – thus, she produces “happy cow milk” that is safe for both you and your little bundle of joy.

Confined cows make low quality milk.

Under these conditions, it’s really no surprise that the milk on our grocery shelves isn’t up to par. But don’t worry….we have some helpful tips just for you!

Because confined dairy cows are fed a steady diet of low quality grain and corn and subjected to “not-so-healthy” conditions, this often leads to disease and utter infections, which in turns creates a need for more antibiotics. And where do those antibiotics go? Straight into our bodies and those of our precious babies! Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in antibiotic resistance in people because those antibiotics pass straight into the milk we drink and feed our children.

Additionally, have you heard of growth hormones? To keep these mama cows producing the maximum amount of milk possible, they are also given all sorts of bovine growth hormones, all which make their way into the milk that you later drink or give your children. These antibiotics and hormones are questionable safety-wise and have been banned by most European nations. Certain growth hormones given to these dairy cows have even been linked to an increase risk of reproductive, breast, prostate, colon, and several other cancers. Remarkably, as dairy consumption around the world has increased so have cancer rates. Probably not a coincidence, right?

So, what’s a mom to do? We have to protect our little ones and still provide them with the essential amounts of calcium that they need each and every day!

So, we’ve been taught that every child must have their daily doses of milk, right? Simply stick to certified, organic milk, produced from cows who have been humanely raised in open pastures. These cows live much healthier happier lives, socialize in fresh air, have less stress, are prone to less disease, and are not fed any antibiotics or growth hormones. It’s a win-win for everyone…including the sweet mama cows!

Pasteurized or ultra-pasteurized? What’s the difference?

“Ultra” anything is better, right?
Pasteurization is simply a process that heats up milk briefly to kill bacteria and then quickly cools it down again. Ultra-pasteurized milk is super heated for two seconds before being cooled and not only kills bacteria but also increases the shelf life of milk. According to the FDA, unpasteurized or raw milk may contain dangerous levels of salmonella, E.coli, and listeria; therefore, pasteurization has been required since 1987.

However, supporters of raw milk claim that any foodborne illness from raw milk is extremely rare. They also state that due to the high amount of disease and cancer-causing additives in industrial, mass-produced milk found on most shelves, raw milk is far safer, healthier, and better tasting. There is also evidence that some of the vitamins and enzymes in milk are destroyed during the pasteurization process, making our precious milk even less nutritious.

Luckily, selling raw milk is illegal in most states (due to the inherent health hazards), so you can easily avoid that dilemma…Thanks goodness.

You don’t have to drink milk to get calcium!

Great news, right?

Okay, so now that you’re pouring out all your milk and throwing your ice cream away, remember there are a lot of options for getting plenty of calcium. Dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, lettuce (not iceberg), and the ever trendy kale are loaded not only with calcium but also vitamins A, C, K, and folate. Wild salmon, sardines, almonds, edamame, figs, oranges, white beans, and even tofu are all great and surprising sources of calcium. Thank goodness! So, don’t worry…If you can’t bear to give up your ice cream (Because let’s face it, what pregnant gal can?), simply opt for a delicious organic version, and you’ll be totally okay.

There is no greater time in your life when your body needs calcium than when you are pregnant or nursing. This means calcium will be very important for you and your baby for many months to come. For your baby, calcium helps encourage healthy skeletal growth that will take place over the next couple…well, decades. For you mama, with all that tummy-filling milk you are soon to make, not to mention the human being you are currently creating, you’re going to need plenty of calcium to stay healthy, too! So, it’s time to start stocking up!

But how much do you need? Pregnant and nursing moms need at least 1,000 mg of calcium per day.
